Pillars of Investment

Detroit LISC invests its expertise, technical assistance, management and program consulting, training, public policy support, and funding to implement initiatives supporting the advancement of our Sustainable Communities agenda.

Our three pillars of investment, encompassing all five core goals of our Sustainable Communities agenda, are:  Land Use and Physical Development, Economic Development, and Community Safety and Healthy Environments.  We also prioritize investments in the community development delivery system to keep organizations sustainable and strong.

Detroit LISC has taken a leadership role in working with key public and private stakeholders to shape and improve the policy environment and systems needed for positive community development in the long term in Detroit. The combination of these investments and support is creating a synergy that serves to align our strategic priorities and create positive change in neighborhoods throughout Detroit.

Land Use and Physical Development

Reclaiming vacant and abandoned land is integral to the success of any community development initiative in Detroit. Vacant and abandoned property could be the city’s biggest asset, if it is reclaimed, redeveloped, and returned to productive use. Thus long term sustainability and physical change in Detroit neighborhoods is dependent upon effective land use and physical development planning.

Stimulating economic activity includes a range of actions from commercial corridor revitalization including infrastructure and façade improvements to business organizing including coordination, marketing, and education support. Investing in opportunities that have the potential to create and retain jobs, enhance the tax base, and improve overall quality of life are critical components of improving economic conditions and creating sustainable communities.

Community Safety and Healthy Environments

Quality community development and supporting the physical and economic investments in neighborhoods must include investments in the safety and health of communities. Detroit LISC investments seek for targeted areas to be visibly improved, the opportunity for crime to be minimized, and neighborhoods to become more aesthetically pleasing. For the youth of Detroit, the aim is to improve academic achievement by creating safe routes to school and increasing access to quality after-school enrichment programs.
